Traditional Christmas markets have opened in Budapest's main squares only for individuals who have been vaccinated against COVID-19, but they have attracted a large number of tourists and locals, despite the fact that central Europe is fighting a new outbreak of the coronavirus.
There were no Christmas outdoor markets in Budapest a year ago since Hungary was under quarantine due to the illness, and vaccines were not yet available. Enjoyed this post? Never miss out on future posts by following us.
The basilica's square market
sells Hungarian handicrafts, traditional snacks like "chimney
cake," a delicious delicacy, and even has a small rink for ice
skaters under its Christmas tree.
Before entering the market, visitors lined up at checkpoints to display their COVID-19 vaccination or immunity certificates, as required by current laws, reuters reports.
In Hungary, masks are only required in interior
public venues, and only a small percentage of visitors chose to wear
them while walking around the outdoor market sipping tea or mulled
wine.
Many of them were tourists who flocked to Budapest as other
central European countries closed their Christmas markets in an
effort to stem the spread of COVID-19 and boost vaccine
uptake.
Because Hungary is facing a fourth wave of COVID-19, attendees at events with more than 500 people must produce confirmation of vaccination or immunity following recovery. Restaurants, businesses, shopping malls, and schools are all open to the public.
