Prime Minister António Costa said today that he does not foresee the need for a new state of emergency in Portugal, but assured that despite the dissolution of parliament, the government will not hesitate to adopt more restrictive measures to prevent stop the Covid19 pandemic.
“Frankly, I do not foresee that we will have to take measures related to the state of emergency,” said António Costa, noting that if necessary “the parliament, even if it is dissolved , still maintaining measures to monitor government operations” allowing new measures to be implemented "in the light of existing legislation". The Prime Minister acknowledged his "concern" about the growth of the number of people "infected with the new coronavirus", but stressed that he did not consider it "predictable that measures will have to be taken again with the dimensions" that they had in the past, given that vaccination has "not only greatly decreased the incidence rate” but has “also ensured that even people who are infected are now less severely ill”.
