The regional government of the Madeira Islands has announced new strict regulations for those who have not been vaccinated against Covid19.
From tomorrow (November 20), unvaccinated people will be banned from “attending or working at public or private events”. In other words, they can no longer attend or work at cultural or sporting events or go to work at barbershops, cinemas, bars, restaurants and other similar establishments.
Those who have not been immunized against Covid19 will have to present a negative Covid19 antigen test to go to the supermarket or attend "Missas do Parto", a Christmas series.
Stricter rules will also be in effect for vaccinated people. Digital certificates will no longer suffice as negative tests for the Covid19 antigen will be necessary to attend or work at cultural or sporting events or to visit or work at a hair salon, cinemas, bars, restaurants and other similar facilities.
Negative tests must have been done within the past week.
Weekly screenings will also be required of residents and nursing home staff, while visits will be limited to one person, who will need vaccinations and testing, per resident.
As the newspaper Observador points out, these are “the most restrictive measures implemented in Portugal to date”.
Miguel Albuquerque, the president of the regional government of Madeira, justified the new restrictions - which will come into force when the archipelago enters a state of emergency - in response to "an increase in cases, hospitalizations and death" in Madeira, mainland Portugal, Europe and the world.
“We took into account the vaccination rate in Madeira to date and the fact that the vaccine reduces the severity of the disease and its lethality. The government has also considered the benefits of mass testing, allowing (the authorities) to identify, test and isolate "positive" citizens, he said.
