Greek Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias declared his ambition to turn Thessaloniki, in the country's north, into a cruise liner home port and hub.
The minister is in Thessaloniki for the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), one of the country's greatest trade shows, which starts on September 11th.
Kikilias told Central Macedonia Regional Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas that the ministry aims to use new technologies to boost cruise tourism in Northern Greece.

“In this way, our tourists and visitors will be able to visit the region's wonderful hotels and enjoy the unique flavors of local products,” the minister explained.
Special types of tourism, like as religious tourism, gastronomic tourism, wine routes, and spa tourism, are among the ministry's ambitions for Northern Greece.
“In this way, Thessaloniki and Northern Greece will gain fresh strength,” he continued.
Moreover, at the meeting, Kikilias announced that the ministry, in collaboration with the area and through the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), will promote Macedonia's "wonderful charms" and exceptional tourism to all markets.
According to him, the campaign will take place in the fourth quarter of the year (during the off season), which is traditionally a challenging time for tourism.
