Portuguese investigator has brought television reporters up to date on scientific thinking elsewhere, stressing that herd immunity is indeed the ‘myth’ that the ‘father of the AstraZeneca vaccine’ Professor Andrew Pollard said it was earlier this week.
Despite facts from the United States and the United Kingdom, Portugal's official attitude has remained unchanged: the country is moving through with mass vaccinations of nearly all age groups on the grounds that it is the only way to "fight the virus."
“We now know that the Delta version may readily infect those who have been vaccinated,” Pedro Esteves, a researcher at Porto’s Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO-InBIO), told SIC.

“One of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine's inventors spoke before the British parliament, claiming that herd immunity is a fiction. In other words, it is now obvious that we will never be able to achieve herd immunity.”
The most essential form of safety when vaccinating people, he added, is to follow guidelines such as wearing masks and keeping a safe distance “because they are what provide guarantees.”
“What we are starting to realise”, he reiterated. “Is that a person who is vaccinated can be infected and can infect others”.
