Italy: Life expectancy drops a year in 2020

ISTAT said on Wednesday that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, life expectancy in Italy has fallen by almost a year in 2020.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the life expectancy at birth in 2020 is 82.3 years, which is lower than the 83.2 years in 2019.

ISTAT’s BES report said: ''The COVID completely wiped out the increase in life expectancy in the north for a decade and partially wiped out life in other parts of the country.'' The report introduced the country’s well-being and its level of equality and sustainability.

"This is a step backwards and it will take a long time to fully recover." ISTAT Chairman Gian Carlo Blangiardo pointed out that: "These indicators have had a particularly violent impact on certain areas of health improvement in the past decade, and these areas have disappeared in just one year."
