New coronavirus infections continue to fall sharply in Spain, and the Health Ministry is predicting that this trend will continue in the coming days.
The latest report from the government on the pandemic, presented last night by Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts (CCAES), recorded 30,251 cases, 16,844 fewer than a week before. The data released on Monday accounts for the entire weekend – i.e. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The current cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents in 14 days is 417, the lowest level in more than a month. This is when the increase in social activities during the Christmas holiday began to surge. Hospital occupations for coronavirus patients also declined last week, albeit at a slower pace than new infections.
According to the latest report, the average daily number of infections in the past week was 9,802, which is nearly three times lower than the peak of the third wave of the ongoing pandemic in Spain, and is getting closer and closer to the lowest point of the second wave.
The data point is approximately Between 6,000 and 8,000. Simón said on Monday that these figures reflect "sufficient trends" and emphasized that the levels in almost all of Spain continue to remain "extremely high".
According to ElPais the government's chief epidemiologist warned that when restrictions are lifted, extreme care must be taken to avoid the fourth wave of "no one wants." The occupancy of the intensive care unit (ICU) by coronavirus patients is still high, reaching 38%, much higher than the worst of the second wave.
