Italy: Number of cancer survivors increases 37 percent

The Italian Society of Medical Oncology (AIOM) said on Monday that approximately 3.6 million people are alive in Italy today having been diagnosed with some form of tumor, a 37% increase from the number of cancer survivors in the country 10 years ago.

But the association also issued an alert about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fight against cancer. It said that in the first nine months of 2020, Italy had reduced the number of screening tests by more than 2 million.

AIOM chairman Giordano Beretta said: "The delay in early diagnosis may lead to an increase in mortality." "The prevention program must be restarted as soon as possible and provide more funds."
